    P C Henderson, is proud to celebrate its 100th year in business this week - signifying an entire century of high quality manufacturing, product innovation and a dedication to worldwide exporting.Founded by Percy Cecil Henderson on the 24th February 1921, the company has come a long way since its humble beginnings where the business started in an unused loft space of a paint and varnish factory. Fast forward 100 years and the company has offices in the UK, Ireland, Holland and China, exports to over 70 countries worldwide and is firmly positioned as the go to provider for sliding door gear.Speaking about the companies continued success, Trevor Cossins, Managing Director at P C Henderson, commented, “Celebrating a centenary in business is a huge achievement, it puts us amongst a rare group of companies which have truly withstood the test of time and it certainly isn’t something that happens by chance.The company operates out of its 2.9 acre Bowburn based manufacturing plant where it has resided for the last 52 years. Showing no signs of slowing down, the company has achieved record sales, multiple award wins and some of the most successful product launches in its history in the last 3 years alone.“In the late 1920s’ Percy Cecil Henderson established the export side of the business – developing strong relationships in South Africa, New Zealand and China – regions which we still have a strong presence in today. I believe this courageous move has been a huge factor in the company’s longevity and success over the years.P C Henderson has won multiple awards for its exporting achievements, most notably ‘UK Export Business of the Year’ at the British Chamber Awards – a highly prestigious and respected award. Exporting currently accounts for 70% of the company’s annual sales with products reaching all four corners of the globe.

    Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, P C Henderson, is pleased to announce its return to the garage door market with a premium range of sectional garage doors, via a strategic partnership with longstanding garage door manufacturer - Gliderol Garage Doors.Henderson Garage Doors, first established in 1954, quickly became a household name and by the 1960’s, P C Henderson had supplied approximately fifty percent of all garage doors installed in the UK.Trevor Cossins, Managing Director at P C Henderson, commented, ‘’P C Henderson has a long standing relationship with the garage door industry, in 2008 P C Henderson moved away from the garage door market to focus on the sliding and folding door hardware element of the business. Due to increased interest, we are now taking back the brand and bringing a high quality range of Henderson Garage Doors to the market. We believe our portfolio of sectional garage doors provide our customers with the opportunity to expand and grow their businesses with a trusted and recognised brand.’Prior to the UK garage door business being sold in 2008, Henderson’s range of sectional doors had sold in the thousands and continually improved and evolved over the years to suit the needs of both the homeowner and the installer. Since 2008 those improvements have continued through state of the art manufacturing and distribution facilities in Europe and - whilst a small number of doors continued to be distributed around the UK - Henderson is now in a position to increase those numbers by working with Gliderol to provide the national coverage they can offer to customers.Andrew Royle, Sales and Marketing Director at P C Henderson, commented, “Since 2008 we have continued to manufacture and supply spare parts in order to ensure all previous installations could be maintained – so we have always kept our foot in the door. We are now looking forward to growing that side of the business and offer an exclusive range of garage doors to the UK market once again”.The range is made up of two types of sectional door - the Henderson Smart 42 and the Henderson Superior 42. Both products are available in 5 models, 3 surface finishes, 7 standard colours as well as the option of RAL colours. The Superior door offers a number of features and benefits unique to that range such as concealed rollers, an integrated tension spring system - offering optimum safety as well as a minimalistic finish - and a ventilated floor seal which offers a continuous flow of clean air inside the garage reducing damp and mould growth.  Along with a range of optional extras and a state of the art remote control system, the possibilities are almost endless with a door to suit every home.

    P C Henderson has recently featured in the North East England Chamber of Commerce all new Contact Magazine to discuss the companies exporting achievements and challenges faced. Read the article below or online on page 66 here.Now selling its products in more than 80 territories, P C Henderson is one of the region’s most successful exporters. The key to its success? Meticulous research and taking the time to go out and understand potential markets. Mark Lane reports.For any company looking to expand its horizons beyond UK waters, the example of folding and sliding door hardware manufacturer, P C Henderson, is surely worth considering. The company’s products can now be found in such settings as Kandahar International Airport in Afghanistan, Shanghai Disneyland in China, the Four Seasons Hotel in Tianjin, China and the headquarters of none other than Nike in the USA.Actually, these are just a tiny handful of the markets served by a business which has been operating in the North East since 1928 and has since spread its wings to multiple countries around the globe. The company now exports to over 80 countries worldwide as well as subsidiary companies in key markets of Ireland, Holland and China.Current top export markets include Indonesia, South Africa, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Holland. Trevor Cossins, managing director of P C Henderson says: “Our focus this year is to concentrate on two key growth markets which we have recently entered – China and Western Europe – to ensure further growth and success." China is particularly interesting. Many North East exporters have targeted this part of the world, with varying degrees of success, so it’s interesting to find out about the approach taken by Trevor and his team when entering this most complex of market places. Not surprisingly, solid research was the starting point. He explains: “Research into the Chinese market recently identified a tremendous increase in individual wealth and an increasing demand for luxury goods. This has resulted in huge growth in the Chinese hotel market where they are building numerous 5-star hotels – many of which require high quality sliding door hardware.”While such locations offer an obvious opportunity for P C Henderson products, there are a huge number of hurdles to overcome after the initial research has identified opportunities. Continues Trevor: “Challenges faced when entering this market included  how to do business, culture differences and language barriers. To counter these, our sales and marketing director, Andrew Royle, visited China along with Julius Zhu, the company’s China-based representative. Andrew and Julius engaged with various focus groups of potential customers. We wanted to demonstrate that we wish to create a positive customers experience, learn about product requirements, listen to local conditions and engage with our customers.As a result, we have developed a unique sliding door system specifically for the Chinese hotel market. We’ve also launched a Chinese translated version of our website to support growth in this area.”

    Shutter Slide - P C Henderson’s innovative new louvre hardware will be launched to the market at leading design and architecture event - Architect at Work, Berlin, 7th and 8th November.With our expertise lying in the field of sliding and folding door hardware, we have now put together a solid core product offering for external sliding louvre panels weighing up to 120kg. We will be exhibiting the new system at the Architect at Work tradeshow based in Berlin.“With climates changing and an ever increasing demand for environmental and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited specifications we’ve seen a huge rise in demand for this type of hardware. Louvre systems offer many benefits such as harvesting energy from the sun to heat a building as well as being used to trap heat within a building when used with the correct insulation panels. The system can also aid towards light reduction, sound insulation, flexible privacy options as well as the ability to enhance a facades architectural aesthetic appearance”, commented Andrew Royle, Sales and Marketing Director.Offering a variety of inspiring and functional design possibilities, the system is available in single panel, bi-parting and telescopic panel variants, as well as being available in either manual or electric operation.  The low voltage, energy efficient electric motors can be wired into the central control panel of a building, allowing the louvre panels to be opened and closed via a central reception area or alternatively by individual switches.“Our previous experience in specifying for louvre projects has allowed us to carry out first hand research into the most common configurations and to understand a customer’s exact requirements. Shutter Slide has been developed off the back of this research and so is extremely fit for purpose and incredibly easy for architects to specify”, continued Andrew.The system has already been specified for a prestigious high rise hotel with a number of projects also at planning stage. Manufactured using marine grade 316 stainless steel, hard wearing polymers and anodised aluminium the system is extremely robust, highly corrosion resistant and developed to withstand the test of time. Each variable component has been tested to 100,000 cycles, EN1527 and meets the robust ISO 9001 manufacturing standards.

    P C Henderson has once again been delighted to donate its Rustic 80 sliding barn door hardware to the hit BBC home renovation series  ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’. The company’s marketing team went along to the ‘Big Reveal’ today in North Shields to welcome the family into their newly renovated home.Running for 18 years and attracting up to 15 million viewers per episode, the award winning show - presented by Nick Knowles and his team - takes on renovation projects across the UK to help well deserving families. Relying on the support and generosity of local tradespeople and suppliers - P C Henderson was more than happy to donate its hardware to the programmes most recent project.Living in a semi-detached 1950s house in North Shields, Rachael and John Matthews have three children – the youngest of which, Evelyn, has a rare genetic condition called CHARGE syndrome. The condition means that Evelyn suffers from many associated medical conditions; she cannot sit unaided, is registered blind, requires 24 hour care and also has chronic kidney failure - requiring Evelyn to be hooked up to a dialysis machine overnight.The hit show stepped in to help the family rebuild their home and lives through a dramatic 9 day renovation.  The renovation included a single story extension at the rear of the property and a garage conversion to provide a new bedroom and separate bathroom for Evelyn. The bedroom is now big enough to accommodate vital medical equipment as well as providing a safe space for an adapted bed, hoist, dialysis machine and a sensory area. The extra space also allows for storage of Evelyn’s medical supplies which were previously kept in a purposefully built shed in the garden, which wasn’t practical.P C Henderson’s black Rustic 80 sliding door hardware has been used in the properties hallway for access to the living room and utility room. Evelyn is unable to be left alone so the family required a downstairs area which was more spacious and open plan - P C Henderson is hoping the sliding door mechanisms have assisted in achieving this.Stephanie Lee, Marketing Manager at P C Henderson, commented “It was fantastic to attend the DIY SOS: Big Reveal today and hear firsthand how local tradespeople and suppliers have come together to help transform the family’s home and lives. Evelyn’s mother - Rachael - explained to us that the renovation means Evelyn can now stay at home with her loving family as she has all the medical supplies and equipment around her that she needs - the North East community should be very proud”.

    P C Henderson’s Managing Director, Trevor Cossins, has recently featured in 'The Long Game' section of this months North East Times magazine. Read the article below or view the online magazine here and turn to page 36.Trevor Cossins is managing director of P C Henderson Ltd – a global company that specialises in the design and manufacturer of hardware systems for sliding and folding doors. Trevor began his career as an apprentice at Perstorp, where he stayed for 18 years, working his way up to site manufacturing manager. Trevor spent 14 years at door manufacturing giant, Jeldwen, before beginning his role at P C Henderson nearly two years ago. P C Henderson now exports to over 70 countries worldwide and has recently been presented with two awards for its exporting achievements.Past Established in 1921, P C Henderson has a long and eventful history. Memoirs describe the first office as being set up in a 40 ft loft space, where the staff were paid £12 per calendar month and second hand furniture was delivered by horse and cart. Details suggest that exporting activity began in 1925 in South Africa and New Zealand. The commitment of the team back then really shines through. Records talk about one team member taking a 10-day cycling tour in France to visit prospective customers and another volunteering to emigrate to New Zealand to set up an office there.The most notable change the company has seen over the years was the selling of the garage door side of the business back in 2008. Garage doors became a huge part of the business back in the 1950s, but in what became a saturated and competitive market, the bold decision to sell this part of the business was made – and it was a decision that has most definitely paid off. On a more personal note, I’ve witnessed the industry become a lot more demanding and fast paced over the last 30 plus years. Business deals were once centralised on relationships, friendships and loyalty so the need for continual investment in research, design, equipment and training is definitely something that I have seen increase over the years. Present What stands out from those early day memoirs is the hard work, dedication and boldness of the team which got the company off to such a great start and something which is still strongly in the Henderson ethos today. The industry as a whole has become a lot more competitive but we’ve worked hard to maintain a strong product offering of the highest quality. We still have customers who have been with us since the early days and are now onto their second and third generations of team members. But a key part of our success is never assuming that our customer base is a given. We maintain and build on our relationships with even our most historic customers. As a result, we now export to all four corners of the world. Trading legislation hasn’t made international trade more difficult but it has certainly made it more challenging. We have a great team that work hard to stay ahead of what changes, policies and procedures are being put into place and what we need to do to stay in line. We’ve recently won two awards for our exporting achievements, this again is a testament to the whole team. Exporting on the scale that we do isn’t easy and to be presented with two prestigious awards is most definitely recognition for all the hard work and dedication from our team as a whole [SME Exporter of the Year at the North East Export Awards 2017 and an Export Award at a North East Business Awards: Durham, Sunderland and South Tyneside Region]. Future Our efforts going forward will be strongly focused on increasing market share in existing markets. This includes the USA and Central Europe – these areas are so vast, we need to work on strengthening our presence there. To assist with this, we’ve recently recruited a German speaking business development manager for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region. We will also look to strengthen our presence in areas such as China, this is a market we’ve discovered has some very unique requirements and so we’re working on some Chinese specific products to assist in our growth over there. ‘Localisation’ and ‘voice of the customer’ are key contributing factors to our export strategy, creating products based on specific market requirements and always listening to our customers. Taking Brexit into consideration, it’s difficult to tell at this point in time how much impact this will have on the business as nobody knows what trade deals will be set. We’re fortunate in that we operate all over the world, not just in Europe, as well as having subsidiaries in Ireland and Holland which I’m sure will assist us once the trade deals come into place – hopefully allowing free trade. I think it’s important for us to encourage more international trading in the North East. My advice to businesses considering exporting would be: don’t be frightened, do your research and be selective. Go somewhere you firmly believe there is an opportunity, it may not happen straight away but take little steps and don’t give up. Image Credit: North East Times Magazine. {{trans "Return to news"}}

    When working at a company established in 1921, a rummage through the archives always proves to be of interest. Since launching our latest brochure at the end of last year I thought it would be interesting to have a look through one of our oldest catalogues ‘Catalogue No.35’ which, after little bit of research, I discovered was circulated in 1936.Entitled ‘Henderson Door Gear, British Throughout, Architects Edition No.35’, the brochure features a green material cover with a gold emblazoned logo and has a somewhat grand and official appearance. Featuring 120 pages, the brochure showcases an extensive product range and endless hand drawn technical drawings with the utmost detail.The first page features an image of H.R.H The Duke of Kent opening the ‘Barking Industrial Exhibition,’ which I can only presume was an exhibition of P C Henderson’s industrial products at the time. The address reads ‘Tangent Works, Barking, Essex’ – a name which carries on in our products ‘Tangent Folding’ and ‘Tangent Round the Corner’ still to this day.As you flick through the pages, images of the company’s first owned factory can be found. The official looking executive and drawing office can be seen, along with many images of the production lines, assembly areas, packaging, distribution and the old machinery – as well as many a waistcoat and flat cap!The ‘Henderson Permanent Guarantee’ can be found on page 8, which again has a very grand appearance with an embossed stamp and signed by the company’s founder ‘Percy Cecil Henderson’, who later passed away in 1958.  Pricing can be found further on in the brochure with a 290 bracket being listed at 6 pennies and a 290 track at 8 pennies per foot, along with free delivery on all orders over £3 – a little different to current day pricing  but a lot of money back in the 1930’s!What’s great is that some of Henderson’s most traditional products, which we still manufacture, can be found in the brochure - including Majestic, Straight Sliding, Council, Tangent Folding, Tangent Round the Corner and Sterling. A tag line on page three reads ‘Reliability is the basis of Henderson reputation’– something which has been proven over time given that we are still going strong over 80 years after this brochure was printed.

New product launches, a brand new website and the celebration of the company’s 96th birthday are just some of the highlights.Most recently, Andrew Royle, P C Henderson’s Sales and Marketing Director, embarked on a visit to China to meet face to face to with some major distributors and also attend the annual Assa Abloy Security Solutions Conference alongside Assa Abloy’s Sales Development Manager for Sliding and Folding Door Hardware, Julius Zhu.The annual conference aims to bring together the entire Assa Abloy CPS sales team along with its key distributors from throughout China. P C Henderson also wanted to use this opportunity to demonstrate a direct commitment to Assa Abloy China and its local markets.Andrew commented: “The trip was extremely successful with some very productive meetings held and the Annual Conference was a privilege for us to attend. The intelligence gained from meeting the Assa Abloy teams, for example, will provide Henderson with clear objectives to work towards. Speaking to customers first hand is the only way to gain a true understanding of what we need to do as a company to meet market need”.“Some of our products have also recently been specified in the Four Seasons Hotel in Tianjin, so it was a great opportunity to visit the site and see some of our products used across the luxury development.”
